  • This is the 32Red.com Mares Hurdle. A 20 furlong, Listed Hurdle. The forecast going is soft/good to soft in places.
Briery Queen is an 8 year old mare, trained by Noel Williams, ridden by Barry Geraghty.
Lifeboat Mona head the market at 9/4. The Paul Nicholls trained mare was an easy 8 length winner last time out but she doesn't strike me as the type to follow up with a similar performance, even if she did her form still doesn't entitle her to be the 9/4 favourite for this.
The form horse in the race and indeed the best horse in the race is Briery Queen, she's the one they all have to beat. I've also got her down at 15/8 so 7/2 is good value. Max stakes on this.
Briery Queen has now won her last 3 races and will be looking for a 4 timer here.
She's been extremely impressive in those wins but the most impressive thing is the fact she's improved each time, her win at Cheltenham last time out was a career best.
Her last 2 wins have been in Listed company and winning by over 3 lengths last time out tells me this this is a proper Graded horse. Indeed the Mares Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival is now on the cards so connections clearly think the same.
Last time out Briery Queen beat horses rated up to 137, she beat them all soundly. Last time out Lifeboat Mona beat horses rated up to 127.
Last time out Briery Queen won in a time 15 seconds slower than average in soft ground. Last time out Lifeboat Mona won in a time 36 seconds slower than average in good to soft ground.
In receipt of just 4lb I really don't get why Lifeboat Mona is favourite, Briery Queen looks to be a completely different class of horse.
I don't want to completely rule out the opposition, that would be foolish, however the biggest threat to Briery Queen does seem likely to come from Lifeboat Mona. Having established that Lifeboat Mona isn't in the same league as Briery Queen it again tells me we've got a cracking bet at the odds here.
Barry Geraghty is 2 from 2 on this horse now, interestingly he's also won this race in 2012 & 2013. We have a top jockey on board, he clearly gets on well with this horse and knows what it takes to win this race.
There's just so much to like about Briery Queen, she's definitely the one to beat and is also available at 7/2, it's got to be max stakes.
Bet365 are offering odds of 4.50.
