  • Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is nearing a veteran of the tour and has been inside the top 20 for the past 9 years running finishing 2016 ranked 12.
He had some injury issues in 2016 but if you follow his Twitter he is posting training videos and seems fine to me. He’s playing an exhibition match against David Goffin in Abu Dhabi soon which also implies they are both fit.
He won 72% of matches priced under 3 in 2016. Though lower than Goffin and Nishikori, this is still a reasonable number and he will earn the majority of points needed if he repeats that performance.
Importantly, because of his big hitting, powerful style, he does win some matches against the top 10. In 2014 he famously defeated Djokovic, Murray and Federer to win Toronto Masters priced at 6/1, 2/1 and 2/1 respectively. This only needs to happen once or twice a year and he gains a huge number of points because later rounds of a tournament are worth so much more than early rounds.
I do expect a decline from Tsonga over the next few years. Nonetheless, to be inside the top 20 for 9 years running requires a very high level of consistency, quality and motivation. With constant improvements in the fitness, recovery and injury prevention side of the game players recognise they can now play to near their best level into their early 30s. Tsonga could certainly have another few top 20 years if he keeps himself in shape and is motivated.
    Plus finishing 12 this year down from 10 in 2015 doesn’t exactly imply a fast decline. He finished 12 in 2014, 10 in 2013, 8 in 2012, 6 in 2011, 13 in 2010, 10 in 2009, 6 in 2008. So that’s 3 years of the 9 where he has finished 12 or higher, 3 at exactly 10, and 3 under 10. This isn’t a standout year.
I don’t think this line makes sense and the other bookies agree. Sky have it set at 12.5 odds 1.8 for under and 2 for over. Unibet have gone for 11.5 odds 1.88 for both under and over.
I’m happy investing in him making it 10 years in a row inside the top 20.
