Super Saturday at Newbury was the last chance for many Cheltenham Festival contenders to have their final prep run before the meeting at Prestbury Park.
Some of the winners on the card look to have an excellent chance of having more success at the biggest week of the year in jumps racing. Here are three horses who are worth siding with, in their respective races.
Bravemansgame – Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (11/4)
It was very brave of champion trainer Paul Nicholls to run his leading novice chaser Bravemansgame in a handicap contest on Super Saturday. With him being a Grade One winner, he had to concede a lot of weight to his rivals, but he was up to the challenge.
Nicholls’ runner is now four from four over fences. His latest performance has made him one of the popular Cheltenham Festival 2022 tips for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. He can be backed at 11/4 to come out on top in that contest.
The Kauto Star Novices’ Chase winner is an excellent jumper. It should be a fascinating battle between him and the leading Irish hopeful Galopin Des Champs in the novice contest next month. The former is much bigger in the betting, and he can upset Willie Mullins’ highly regarded chaser.
Eldorado Allen – Ryanair Chase (16/1)
The Denman Chase featured two horses who were looking to enhance their claims for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in Clan Des Obeaux and Royale Pagaille. In the end, it was a Ryanair Chase entrant who prevailed, as Eldorado Allen outstayed his rivals over 2m7½f.
Colin Tizzard’s runner will be dropping down in a trip at Cheltenham, but this latest run will give his connections a lot of confidence. It was an excellent performance from the grey horse, as he continued his impressive campaign.
Eldorado Allen seems to have been underestimated by the bookmakers for the Ryanair Chase, as he is available with odds of 16/1. Last year’s winner Allaho is a worthy favourite, however, beyond the Irish horse, it has an open feel to the race. Tizzard’s chaser goes into the 2m5f contest with a strong each-way chance.
Funambule Sivola – Queen Mother Champion Chase (20/1)
Venetia Williams’ chaser Funambule Sivola put himself in the mix for the Queen Mother Champion Chase with a victory in the Grade Two Game Spirit Chase at Newbury. He got the better of Sceau Royal and Hitman in that contest over the extended 2m trip.
The Champion Chase is arguably the strongest Championship race of the four at the Festival this year. Shishkin, Energumene and Chacun Pour Soi all go into it with strong chances. At 20/1, Funambule Sivola is massively overpriced.
Sivola has an excellent record over fences with six wins from 11 starts. He is capable of staying over much further, so if it is a fast run race, he will be staying on when many of his rivals have had enough. Sivola was not far behind Shishkin in second place in the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree at the back end of last season. He deserves his shot at this feature race on two of the meeting, and he is worth taking a chance with.
Expect all three of the above horses to be at their peak when they get their shot at their respective races at the Festival. The meeting takes place between the 15th-18th of March.
