With the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League well underway, the favourites are starting to stamp their authority. The top five favourites to take the title have been pretty much non-movers, but there are plenty of underdogs snapping at their heels. Could this be a year another dark horse wins the premier European competition?
At the time of writing, the UEFA Champions League odds are firmly in favour of Manchester City at 4.6, although Bayern Munich are just behind at 5.3, with Liverpool and Paris Saint Germain at 7.4 and current holders Chelsea at 10.0. But some UEFA Champions League tips are pointing towards other teams with the ambition and drive to potentially make it through the Round of 16 and go on to, at the very least, the semi-finals stage. Chelsea are a good example of this as they surprised many by not only reaching last year’s final but also beating a heavily favoured City side in the final.
Not such a long shot?
Manchester United have had a poor Premier League season so far, dropping out of the top five. Yet with Cristiano Ronaldo on the books alongside Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes, they have the star power to turn up in big games. Juventus may or may not go on to regret selling their main man Ronaldo, yet they’re still priced at a healthy 32.0 to win the competition.
Atletico Madrid are another team to watch as Diego Simeone is regarded to have assembled his strongest squad yet. After narrowly missing out on the UCL title twice, Simeone will be pushing hard for the big win this season. With odds at 40.0, they have good value, although two defeats to Liverpool in the group stage made it hard for them to be a convincing case. Real Madrid, too, are still very much on the radar at 27.0 for the title, despite neglecting to sign Kylian Mbappe. And, of course, Atalanta remain one of the most exciting teams to watch on the European stage and are certainly expected to ruffle some feathers. So, is it worth a punt on them to come out on top at 150.0?
The favourite five’s finest
Taking on the top five favourites with their powerhouse players is going to be tough. Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski ranks third on the list of all-time scorers in the Champions League while Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah has racked up numerous Champions League goals for the Reds. The big summer signings of Belgium’s all-time top goal scorer Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea and midfielder Jack Grealish becoming the most expensive English player ever when he joined Manchester City could still be eclipsed by PSG’s incredible addition to their squad. The legendary Lionel Messi now joins Neymar, Mbappe and Angel Di Maria as the undoubted jewel in PSG’s attacking crown.
