Trainer Lucinda Russell can become only the fourth woman in history to train a Grand National winner in April as One For Arthur looks like a great bet to win the 4m4f steeplechase at Aintree.
In order to win the Grand National, you need a horse who jumps extremely well and will stay every inch of the gruelling trip around the Merseyside track. Since switching for the fences, One For Arthur has given the impression that he is the perfect horse for the race.
Russell’s chaser has had just eight runs over fences so far in his career and he has completed the course on all of those starts. He made a winning start to chasing at Kelso at the beginning of last season when he scored by two lengths ahead of Seldom Inn at the Scottish track.
One For Arthur showed a liking for the bigger fences at Aintree in his first run over them in the Becher Handicap Chase earlier this season. He came home fifth of the 22 runners but was only beaten by three lengths, therefore his trainer will be very encouraged by that outing.
The eight-year-old’s best run of his career so far came on his latest start at Warwick where he won a Grade Three handicap chase over 3m5f. The step up in trip triggered an improvement from the horse which is a great sign for Aintree as the 4m4f distance might just be what he is looking for.
One For Arthur can be backed at 20/1 at the time of writing. If you are having a bet on the contest, look out for one of the new generous sign-up offers available as you may be able to gain a free bet on the Grand National betting which can be used on another race at the meeting this year.
The last five winners of the Grand National have been 25/1 or bigger, therefore you shouldn’t be afraid of backing a horse at a big price. Shutthefrontdoor is a 50/1 shot in the ante-post betting at Aintree and could definitely outrun his odds in April. Jonjo O’Neill’s runner finished the course last year in ninth place. He was in touch with the leaders until the third fence from home where he then weakened.
Shutthefrontdoor is worth taking another chance with this year as the experience of the 2016 race will certainly help his chances. The 10-year-old is a former Irish Grand National winner as he was successful at Fairyhouse in 2014. He went off at 12/1 in the betting last year so there is no reason why he should be as big as 50/1 this time around.
Jonjo O’Neill won the Grand National with Don’t Push It in 2010 when Tony McCoy rode his first and only winner in the race. Shutthefrontdoor has a similar profile to Don’t Push It and is definitely worth an each-way bet as he looks to give O’Neill and owner John P McManus their second victory in the world-famous steeplechase.
