Mark Wallis improved his chances of winning the Trainer of the Year again after Adageo Bob secured a superb victory in the final of the inaugural British Breeders’ Stakes over 500m at Nottingham.
Wallis picked up 50 points for the Category One success and it now looks as though the trainers? title will go to the wire, with Paul Young, Charlie Lister, and Chris Allsopp all still in contention for the accolade in the betfair odds.
Adageo Bob trailed Hadrians Wall in the early stages at Nottingham but got up in the final strides to win by a short head. Hadrians Wall eventually had to settle for second spot with Midway Lady Luck just a half-length back in third.
Adageo Bob had qualified for the final after powering to victory in the third semi-final. Rin Tin Tin had set the early pace but Adageo Bob responded well to beat fellow strong finisher Midway Lady Luck by one-and-a-half lengths in 29.74 seconds.
The British Breeders? Stakes effectively replaced the Nottingham Produce Stakes, which was run for the final time in 2012 over the same 500m course and distance as the new event.
According to the greyhound betting page on betfair.com, it had been decided that the Produce Stakes, which had been run at a number of venues since its inception at Harringay in 1983, was no longer financially viable.
However, a proposal was made to the British Greyhound Racing Fund by the Greyhound Breeders? Forum about a substitute competition.
Breeders? Forum honorary secretary, Bob Gilling, said: ?While the number of litters bred has reduced, the quality of the British breeding is better than ever as is evident in the number of British-breds reaching Category One finals in the last few years.”
In the new format, the only restriction was that the entries had to be whelped in 2011.
