Poker Hand Rankings: What Beats What in Poker

  • March 23, 2023

Before we start talking about what beats what in poker, and combinations that are good or bad, we need to go a little deeper into the subject matter and psychology of this sport. Yes, poker is considered a sport, although in some countries it is still considered a form of gambling.

However, with the development of technology, poker has also developed and transformed from numerous online games and live in games ones that are still represented.

Each way of playing the game is specific from psychology, coming up with tactics, knowing the rules of poker, the possibility of bluffing, and reading your opponent like an open book. Some things are very important, from the use and knowledge of mathematics to the use of the right strategy, control, and self-discipline.

The highest card

One of the easiest, weakest, and perhaps most frequent combinations of cards. Here it is important that when you get the cards, you see which is the strongest card among the 5. The opponent may be in the same position as you and therefore the second-strongest card wins.

One pair

This means that you are dealt cards with a pair of the same symbols but different suits, let’s take for example two aces. As a rule, this means looking at the third card that is the strongest in combination with the one you have in your hands.

Two couples

One of the combinations is the one that comes in two pairs, and if your opponent has the same two pairs in his hands. The rules say that whoever has the strongest fifth card wins. These are perhaps the combinations that occur more often than others.

Three of a kind

This is also one of the more interesting combinations where you have to have at least three of the same cards.

You know that in the deck there are only 4 symbols that are the same but in different colors and symbols. Therefore, the one who has this combination in his hands wins.

Scale

Scale or better known as five cards in a row is a good combination and here wins the highest card in a row. Note, however, that they can be used ambiguously at the beginning or end of a string.

Flush

As the name of the poker hand suggests, it is a combination of cards that are of the same suit and have two options, red or black. If the opposite player has a similar combination, the winner becomes one with the strongest individual hands.

Full house

This is one of the most common winning combinations you can get in poker and it is about getting three of a kind and a pair. If your opponent finds himself in a similar situation, the winner becomes the one who has the strongest three cards of the same suit.

Poker or four of a kind

Every poker beginner thinks that this is one of the strongest combinations, but they are wrong. Because there are cards in the deck that have 4 of the same. If you happen to get four of the same and so does your opponent, then the winner is decided based on who has the stronger and higher card.

Straight flush

One of the strongest combinations you can reject in poker is a straight flush. This combination contains consecutively arranged cards of the same sign.

If the opponent finds himself in a similar situation as you and has this combination of cards, then the one with the stronger streak wins.

Royal flush

It bears this name for a reason this combination of cards is the strongest and is so rare that it can make you lucky once in a million handing of combinations. What makes it specific is that all the cards are in the same sign and suit, such as Ace, Queen, King, and Ten.

Conclusion

When it comes to this game, everyone thinks that a little heart is needed here, but that is not the case. Of course, luck follows the brave, but here you must have experience, and knowledge, know how to master all the basic rules, and know how to control yourself. All these aspects are difficult by themselves let alone in combination, but if you want to be a successful poker player you have to toughen up and be as cold as ice.

One of the most important things is to learn when to give up, many people make a mistake when they try to get out of a loss and lose even more money there. It is also known that you avoid playing poker if you are under any emotion, especially a negative one, because then you will not be able to think soberly and it is best to move away from the table.
